Our History

The History of Geographe - 40 Years of Manufacturing Innovation

1968 Geographe Enterprises is founded by local engineer Neville Hyder in Busselton and named after Port Geographe in the south of Western Australia. Geographe was founded in a small Busselton factory in 1968From the Busselton factory, Geographe supplied engineering services to the farming, mining and resources industries. The business grew quickly so a larger factory was constructed in Bunbury in 1970.Geographe acquired the Okuma Machining Centre 600 a breakthrough in unattended manufacturing technology. Neville Hyder, founding engineer of Geographe Enterprises. By the 1990’s, the Bunbury factory had grown considerably in size, operation and scope.

1970 First stage of the Bunbury factory is constructed.
1987  Launch of 'Solid Pin Kit' - major product innovation developed by Geographe for CAT loaders.
1989   Outright winner 'Small Business of the Year', South West Small Business Awards.
Geographe Deck & Anchor Winch' recognised for outstanding design at the Australian Design Awards
1991  ISO 9002 Quality Management System accreditation for design, manufacture, fabrication & servicing of parts & equipment in the defense, resources & mining industries (first for WA engineering companies).
1994 First to fully adopt workplace agreements.
First to fully implement self-directed work teams.
Acquisition of the FANUC Robot & Okuma Machining Centre 600 which can run for 24hrs unattended (both from Japan).  This marks a major stepping stone towards advanced manufacturing technology in WA.
1995  Clayton Hyder (MD) embarks on vision to commission a multifunctional turning centre capable of producing an economic batch size of 1.
Category winner 'Human Resources Award', WA Industry & Export Awards.
1996  Quality accreditation upgraded to AS/NZS IS0 9001 Quality Management System (highest ISO 9001 international quality standard) to incorporate Geographe’s design & development procedures.
Geographe Energy' established to cater to the oil & gas industry as an independent business unit within Geographe Enterprises Pty Ltd.
1997  Acquisition of the FANUC Robocut Wire EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) (Japan).
1999  Oil & gas division of Geographe Enterprises is established as a company in its own right, 'Geographe Energy Pty Ltd'.
2000  First company in WA to adopt the SAP system for medium sized businesses.
Acquisition of the Integrex 50 Robotic Turning Centre (Japan).
2001  Category winner 'Second Generation Family Business', Family Business Awards.
Winner 'CY O’Connor Award' recognising excellence in Engineering, WA Industry & Export Awards.
Australia’s first live transaction across the e-marketplace Quadrem took place between Geographe and WMC.
2002  Acquisition of the Hofler CNC Gear Grinder – leading international manufacturing technology from Germany.
Commence distribution to international markets starting with Papua New Guinea.
2003  AS/NZS 4801:2001 Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems accreditation for process management, machining, fabrication, heat treatment, electroplating, ferrous & non-ferrous castings maintenance, pressure testing & metallurgical analysis processes.
Installation of CISCO VoIP Digital phone System - one of the first companies in Australia.
Expands international distribution strategy to Indonesia.
2004  Clayton Hyder awarded Western Region category winner for 'Consumer & Industrial Products', Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards.
Appointed as the authorised service repair centre for Lightnin gearboxes in WA.
2005  Acquisition of an AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle), Mazak Vertical Machining Centre (Japan) & Shigiya robotically loaded Cylindrical Grinder completes the automated milling centre & unattended manufacturing system.
S/NZS ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management System accreditation for project management, machining fabrication, heat treatment, electroplating, ferrous & non-ferrous castings maintenance, pressure testing & metallurgical analysis processes.
Expands international distribution strategy to India.
2006  Expands international distribution to Ghana
2007  Expands international distribution to the United States.
2008  Expands international distribution to Singapore.
2009  Geographe celebrates 40 years of manufacturing & launches the new brand.
