Finite Element Analysis

FEA (Finite Element Analysis) is a method of mechanical computer simulation used by Product Development Division to assess the load carrying capacity of Geographe parts.  It is commonly used to validate and analyse product designs when:

  • The component/assembly is completely new and it is unknown how it will perform in the field.  The FEA package will assess the load that the part is designed to take from a 3D model drawing
  • The component/assembly has failed and assessment must be conducted to determine how the failure occurred.  This way, Geographe can determine improvements that can be made on the existing design.

This technique allows Geographe to gain insight into how parts will function under real-world conditions.  It identifies points where stressors and deflections can occur in components and assemblies under specified loads.  The calculations are performed with the aid of software called “Solidworks Simulation” that is used by Geographe in conjunction with “Solidworks 3D Models”.  By highlighting potential weaknesses on a proposed design, multiple refinements can be made to improve the quality and increase the dependability of a product without the need for extensive prototyping.  This way FEA allows Geographe to design products for optimum life.
