REPAIRS

Case Study - $50 Million Saving

A customer operating marine production platforms from which gas is piped to shore encountered a big problem when two of their four pumps failed, with only one spare pump available. The problem was traced back to the crankshaft and with the original manufacturer unable to provide acceptable delivery times the company was looking at losing approximately 1 million dollars a day whilst only operating at half capacity.

The company then turned to Geographe for help. Geographe’s engineering staff evaluated the options and decided the first step was to repair one crankshaft and manufacture under sized bearing shells to suit. Geographe also cast special tin / lead / copper alloy bearings rather than white metal shells to shorten the process and provide a quicker response.

Due to an industrial strike a charter plane had to be arranged to deliver the parts with minimal downtime. Whilst special temporary parts enabled the pumps to work at full capacity, Geographe was able to manufacture two new crankshafts for the platform in record time.

Due to the quick response of the Geographe team, the company now has four efficient pumps. As a result, long down time and large costs of up to $50 million were avoided.
